For students to be able to succeed in today’s tech industry, relevant experience is often required even at entry level positions. As members of the university IT department, we have the unique ability to not only provide a job opportunity for students to gain this experience, but also to provide valuable mentorship along the way. This presentation will cover how our web development team at UC Irvine hires and mentors student IT employees so that they are ready for the next step in their career.

I wish to discuss the history of women in STEM fields (focusing on the computer industry), including the challenges and the lessons learned. That history has a bearing on current workplace issues, and gives us a context. At the Bren School of Environmental Science & Management we have lots of spreadsheets. We also have lots of duplicated data. We have sheets for people, offices, groupings of people, management of our space. We have simulated databases in our web site. When UC Irvine realized that advisors had access to the right data in the wrong way, we harnessed business intelligence tools to provide richer and more timely reporting through a new self-service application called Compass. In this presentation we will explore how business analysis, advisor interviews, and user experience design were employed to bring about student data reporting tools that met the real needs of campus advising units.
UCI's Community Provider Database, a resource for Wellness, Health & Counseling Services was created in collaboration with the Student Health Center, Counseling Center, Campus Social Workers, and CARE (Campus Assault Resources & Education).
The database filters mental health professionals in the surrounding geographic area based on very specific criteria. Upon request, staff will search the database and provide a list of referrals to students. Upcoming enhancements will open access to this application directly to the community.
