UCCSC 2018 FAQ

Hopefully these frequently asked questions will provide you answers. In the meantime, please send your questions to uccsc2018-chairs@ucdavis.edu. We also monitor the #uccsc channel on the UC Tech Slack. At the conference, we will staff an Information Booth in the Conference Center and friendly volunteers will be trained to answer just about any question posed to them.

General

I need to know where to park on campus.

Here is a map of available lots on campus:  http://taps.ucdavis.edu/sites/taps.ucdavis.edu/files/attachments/TAPS%20parking%20map.pdf

Lot 1 is the closest to the conference site and offers plenty of parking, as well as recharge stations for electric and plug-in vehicles. Lot 48 is the closest to the dorms but offers limited parking. Lot 47 is considerably larger and will regularly have spots available.

Is the opening reception dinner inside or outside?

The opening reception at the Good Life Garden is outside. Plan your clothing choices accordingly (you won't need a sweater). There are ample shady spots provided by the buildings and trees but it will likely be warm. Also, don't forget to wear sunscreen and bring insect repellent. (We will have sunscreen and bug repellent at registration too.)

Can I bring a guest to any of the UCCSC activities?

UCCSC activities are intended for UC employees only, aside from the keynote speeches which are open to the public.

Can I use my (other UC campus) parking permit at UC Davis?

UC Davis will honor other UC parking permits. However, we will only honor annual, or long term staff and faculty permits.  Those permits will be honored in our visitor lots. We will not honor daily passes or student permits from other UC’s.

How do I request mobility assistance at the conference?

Request the conference mobility shuttle by going to #UCCSC on uctech.slack.com. UCCSC volunteers will assist you with next steps.

How do I connect to WiFi at the conference?

We use eduroam at UC Davis. If you're an eduroam user you should automatically connect when you're on our campus. If you have questions about eduroam, consult this Knowledge Base article. If you're not an eduroam user, we also have a guest network called UCD-Guest Wireless.

Are there any lactation rooms in the conference venues?

There are lactation rooms in the conference venues but to access them, you first have to register for the program. They don't make this information public for health and safety reasons. Here is the link to get started: https://worklife-wellness.ucdavis.edu/departments/worklife-wellness/breastfeeding

I need to cancel my attendance at UCCSC. What's the policy?

Cancellations will be processed less a $4.20 processing fee if requests are received in writing by July 3, 2018. No refunds will be issued after July 3.

What should I do in case of an emergency during the conference?

We have personal emergency contact information for every attendee so the person listed will be contacted first. In the case of an emergency on campus during the conference, call 911 and move away from the threat. Be aware of where the building exits are. Also, sign up for the UC Davis campus emergency notification system: WarnMe / Aggie Alert - to receive any real time notifications and instructions in an emergency (https://www.getrave.com/login/ucdavis-community).

If I have a question while I'm at the conference, who do I ask?

You can ask a UCCSC volunteer (you'll see them wearing the dark blue polo shirts with the UCCSC logo), talk to someone at the Information Booth in the Conference Center, or go to UC Tech Slack #UCCSC and ask a question.

Where will Lost & Found be located at the conference?

Please go to the Information Booth in the Conference Center to inquire about lost and found items.

Sessions

Why should I add sessions to my schedule now?

Signing up for sessions in advance helps you manage your schedule and it also helps the conference organizers gauge interest in the sessions and assign them to the appropriate sized room space. Note, if you added a session to your schedule, it does not mean that you have a reserved spot. Show up to the session early to make sure you have a seat as there are capacity limits to each room and we cannot exceed them.

I'm a session presenter. What do I need to do in advance of UCCSC?

Prepare your slide deck and upload a copy of it to the cloud for backup (Google Drive, Box, OneDrive). Session presenters were emailed further preparation instructions.

During the conference, is there a quiet space I can use to prepare for my session?

If you need some time to prepare or review your session during the conference, we have allocated a space (the Parker Room/Art Studio) in the Manetti Shrem Museum for your use. It will be open on Tuesday and Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

How do I submit a proposal for a Birds of a Feather session?

Go to the Birds of a Feather page for information. If your questions aren't answered, email Jeremy Phillips, our Birds of a Feather point person.

What's a Lightning Talk?

If you have something to share but don't want to spend a lot of time doing it, then a Lightning Talk might be what you're looking for. Lightning Talks are an opportunity to give a very short (5 minutes max!) presentation to the UC-wide tech community. Go to this page for more information on how they will work.

Lodging

Can you tell me more about the dorm rooms? Do they have air conditioning? Are they private rooms? Private bath?

Yes, the dorm rooms are air conditioned. Each room is private, single occupancy, but there is no private bath. A group of rooms share a common bathroom.

If I signed up for a dorm room, how do I know where I will be staying?
The UCCSC campus dorm housing is located at the Tercero Residence Hall Area (exact building TBD).
See this webpage for more information: http://housing.ucdavis.edu/housing/tercero/  A room will be assigned to you when you check in. For more information, please see Guest Services and Information at
How far are the dorms from the conference venues?
Directions will be provided to you when you check in, but it's an easy 15 minute walk, depending on your pace.

Activities

Do the activities, like morning yoga, cost anything?

All conference activities are no additional charge.

What do I need to bring to the Yoga class?

Please bring a yoga mat (only a few are available to borrow), water, and a small towel.

Where does the Yoga class take place?

We have a lot of interest in the yoga classes so they will be held outside in the grassy area outside of the Conference Center and Gallagher Hall. Look for signage in the front of the Conference Center.

Where do we meet for the campus bus tour and how long is it?

The bus tours will start and end at the Hyatt and will take approximately 45 minutes.

What times does the bus tour start?

The bus tour will depart at the top of the hour. Check out the conference schedule for more information.

Where does the walking tour start and at what time?

The Arboretum walk will begin at 6:30 a.m. at the Welcome Center (right next to the Conference Center). Remember to dress in layers, wear comfortable walking shoes, and bring your water bottle.

Where does the Arboretum run start?

We will meet in front of the Conference Center at 6:15 a.m. and walk to the Putah Creek loop path to start the 3.5 mile run.

Does the conference cover the cost of bowling?

Yes, bowling is paid for during the 7:00- 9:00 p.m. hours, for the six lanes we've reserved. Shoe rental is also covered. Please bring your UCCSC badge so you can obtain the shoes and don't forget your socks!

Where is the bowling alley?

The bowling alley is located in the Games Area of the Memorial Union. It is under the Campus Bookstore with access from within the MU.

Is there anything else to do in the Games Area?

The Games Areas has billiard tables, games consoles, and board games, all at a reasonable price.
